An antireflection film is usually applied to the surface of a lens to prevent a decrease in the amount of light. For this film, when the coating is on a lens with a small curvature, it can be handled almost like coating on a flat substrate. However, when the curvature and the size are both large, performing the coating in this way produces an anti-reflection film that may vary in thickness at various places across the lens surface. This results in uneven antireflection characteristics and other color unevenness and it is not possible to obtain the proper characteristics. In response to this, Optical Coatings Japan has developed technology using a special manufacturing method to control the film thickness in order to equalize the characteristics across the lens surface. This technology is also used for products for space observation. In addition, for industrial applications, we believe that this coating can demonstrate its effectiveness on lenses such as those used in exposure equipment in drawing systems that require high precision.
